What's accepted at the DOS

The Drop Off Station accepts plastic bags!
The Drop Off Station accepts #2 and #4 plastic grocery, newspaper and dry cleaning bags for recycling.

After many years of residents requesting plastic bag recycling, the Drop Off Station now will accept #2 (high density polyethylene) and #4 (low density polyethylene) plastic bags only. The bags must be clean, dry and free of debris, including receipts, before recycling due to the sensitivity of this material. Meat, bread or food wrappers are not accepted. Ziploc brand storage bags or baggies, trash bags, bags with strings or hard plastic handles are not accepted.

Extreme care must be taken to ensure that the plastic is dry and contaminate free. Moisture can cause a "runny" effect in the remanufacturing stage that will ruin the entire batch of plastic. Receipts and other debris create inconsistencies in new products. Food waste makes a gooey mess that ruins new plastic. Plastics other than #2 and #4 melt at a different temperature and will ruin the entire batch.

Recycle Ann Arbor understands the challenge of plastic bag recycling and knows that the recyclers of Washtenaw County are up to the task.

The plastic bags, along with stretch wrap and wood waste, such as wood chips, shavings and sawdust, can be made into decking material that is a leading alternative to wood decking. In addition to saving trees, the product is durable, splinter-free, highly weather and insect resistant, and doesn't need staining and sealing.

The Drop-Off Station, operated by Recycle Ann Arbor on behalf of Washtenaw County, is open to the general public throughout the year. Area residents and businesses may recycle a variety of materials at the Drop-Off Station, some with a fee, including mixed paper, mixed containers, Styrofoam, rechargeable batteries, hardcover books, tires, car batteries, transmission fluid, antifreeze, motor oil, oil filters, fluorescent light tubes, and freon appliances. The Drop-Off Station also accepts light waste, televisions, electonics, computers, building materials, yard waste, ferrous (steel) metals, and concrete for a fee.

The Drop-Off Station's hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
