The paper that can be recycled include junk mail, magazines, softcover books, catalogs, phonebooks, boxboard, and newspapers. The containers that can be recycled include #1 and #2 plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel food cans, aluminum foil and trays, small household scrap metal, empty aerosol cans, and milk carton and juice boxes. Residents will also be able to recycle flattened corrugated cardboard, hardcover books, textiles (including paired shoes), household and auto batteries, Styrofoam, motor oil and oil filters, and #2 and #4 plastic grocery bags. Recycle Ann Arbor will also host two annual cleanup events in September 17, 2005 and May 20, 2006 from 9 AM to 2 PM at Scio Township Hall, 827 N. Zeeb Road. At these events, Recycle Ann Arbor will be collecting all the materials accepted at the monthly drop offs in addition to bulkier items, some for a fee, that aren't accepted at the monthly drop offs. At the annual events, Scio Township residents will be able to drop off the following for recycling for a fee per item: monitors, tvs, computers, printers, scanners, stereo equipment, electronics, Freon appliances (such as refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers), tires, CDs, 3.5" floppy disks, audio and video tapes, propane tanks, and fluorescent tubes. Recycle Ann Arbor has long been a leader in recycling and waste reduction, having started the state's first curbside program in 1978. Truly a grassroots effort, the first households were served long before the advent of specialized equipment relying on flatbed trucks equipped with 50-gallon drums and the hard work of countless volunteers, who drove, collected materials, prepared and distributed the education materials, and sorted materials for market. This community-based nonprofit organization served as a model for dozens of other nonprofits throughout the state whose mission was to conserve resources and reduce waste and helped to create Michigan's recycling movement. Recycle Ann Arbor has continued to seek out new and innovative programs and services to reduce waste and increase recycling. Building from the success of the curbside program, Recycle Ann Arbor's other programs include the state's largest drop-off center, handling 6500 tons of material per year; and the Reuse Center, a 20,000 SF retail outlet for the resale of building materials, furniture, household goods, appliances, and more otherwise destined for the landfill. In the past five years, Recycle Ann Arbor has expanded its focus to include energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly building through its Environmental House. Through this program, RAA has taken a leadership role in developing a local green-building movement by bringing interested professionals together and promoting sustainable building techniques.
