A Day at the Urban Sawmill

Kelvin Potter Demostrating the Alaskan Mill in 2011Recycle Ann Arbor’s Reuse Center will be hosting an Urban Sawmill Day on Saturday, October 27th from 10am – 2pm at 2420 S. Industrial Hwy. This is the second time the event has been held, and the day promises to be fun and informative.

Recycle Ann Arbor’s ReUse Center is one of two locations where you can buy Urbanwood. Urbanwood is southeast Michigan’s reclaimed wood marketplace. The organization saves and recycles the best logs from dead urban trees and works to create a variety of beautiful, high-quality Urbanwood products. Urbanwood has attracted recent press coverage from The Awesome Mitten and Concentrate magazine, and examples of Urbanwood furniture made by Reuse Center customers can be viewed on RAA’s blog from July 3rd and July 13th.

In 2005, Recycle Ann Arbor and the Southeast Michigan Resource Conservation and Development Council were encouraging recycling of dead urban trees and the Urbanwood project was launched based on this work. Today a wide selection of sustainable woods products is available. Urbanwood Partners are typically small, family-owned businesses that have found ways to recover good logs from landscape tree removals. When trees are removed from communities, Urbanwood ensures that they become usable products that conserve resources and support local jobs.

Sawmill Day Activities

Equipment on site will include a sawmill, edger, planer, metal scanner, and Alaskan mill. Experts will be present to explain and demonstrate how the equipment works, and how it is used in the production of quality Urbanwood  products.

Tervol Saw Demonstration 2011Visitors will be able to purchase Urbanwood through the ReUse Center’s Urbanwood store, and order artwork and gifts made by local designers, such as frames made by Urban Ashes. It’s a great opportunity to see what items are available.

The event is suitable for the whole family. Kids will be able to join in with the scavenger hunt and see a recycling truck up close. Adults can learn why high quality, local, and sustainable wood products are a great choice for their project, the local economy, and the environment.

If you can’t make it to Urban Sawmill event, Recycle Ann Arbor’s ReUse Center is open Monday through Saturday 10am – 5pm, and Sundays 10am -2pm. You can drop in any time to see the large stock of Urbanwood.  Follow the ReUse Center on Facebook at, or call 734-222-7880 for more information. Staff will be happy to assist you with any questions on sales or donations.
