The Drop-Off Station Introduces Secure Document Shredding
Recycle Ann Arbor, a national leader in recycling and waste programs, announces that the Drop-Off Station (DOS) is now offering a secure paper shredding service.
The Drop-Off Station, located at 2950 E. Ellsworth Road, targets recyclable materials originating from homes and small businesses. It is the largest public drop-off site in Michigan. Customers bring a range of waste types to the site, and Recycle Ann Arbor works to limit the amount of this material sent to landfill. Currently around 50% of the material brought to the DOS is sent for recycling.
Customers at the facility have often asked if a document shredding service could be provided on site. Recycle Ann Arbor’s Drop-Off Station currently provides a hard drive shredding service but due to limited space has been unable to introduce paper shredding with a shredding truck. To provide customers with a requested service and a convenient system, effective September 1st, Recycle Ann Arbor is launching a document shredding service which utilizes lock boxes.
The shredding service will cost $4 per grocery bag and $6 per banker’s box. A grocery bag typically holds around 16lbs of paper, the equivalent price per pound is 25 cents. A similar service at a local office supply retailer is 79 cents per pound. Customers using the service will still be subject to the $3 entry fee, but can maximize their visit by bringing other materials for recycling. Metal items, plastics, paper, glass containers, automotive oil and cardboard are all included in the $3 entry fee. However, even when including the $3 entry fee, one full bag of documents is only equivalent to 44 cents per pound!
When customers arrive at the Drop-Off Station they should stop at the gatehouse and pay the appropriate fee. They will be directed into the barn area and a staff member will accompany them to the lock box location. The customer will be asked to show their receipt and will then be able to place their paperwork into a secure lock box.
Once the lockbox is full it will be transported a short distance to NPR Recycling in Romulus, MI where the documents will be shredded on site. NPR offers full service shredding of old files, purged documents, design work, or other "sensitive" material. Their bonded staff, locking containers, and secure warehouse help to protect the most important data for destruction. NPR provides document destruction for St. Joes and all the William Beaumont locations.
Recycle Ann Arbor hopes that offering a range of convenient services in one location will increase the benefits of the Drop-Off Station for customers.
Recycle Ann Arbor’s Jackson Rd facility formally ‘Calvert’s’ (7891 Jackson Rd.) conducts a live shredding event every second Saturday of the month (April – November) and does not charge the $3 entry fee. Customers wishing to see their documents destroyed live can attend these events.
