Recycling carts should be placed at the curb, three feet away from all other carts or objects, including cars. There should also be overhead clearance of 15 feet, clear of trees, electrical wires, etc. to allow the carts to be lifted and emptied.
It is recommended that all full carts are pulled to the curb the night prior to your normal service day to avoid it being a late set out. If documented as a late set out (after the driver has serviced your side of the street) you will have to wait until the following service day for service. Recycle Ann Arbor will not return the same service week to service late set outs.
In snowy conditions, recycling carts should be placed at the curb, three feet away from all other carts or objects, including cars. The snow must be cleared away from the top and all sides of the carts to allow the trucks to access the carts. Also, salt/dirt should be laid over icy areas to keep our drivers safe. There should also be overhead clearance of 15 feet, clear of trees, electrical wires, etc. to allow the carts to be lifted and emptied. Carts that are placed on top of snow banks will not be serviced. A ground-level shelf needs to be cut into snow banks to set cart at curb for service in winter.
The automated collection trucks use the bar to lift the carts so they may be emptied. The bar must face the street so the lift operates correctly. When the metal bar is not facing forward, the lid could become damaged and will send the recycling contents of the cart onto the ground instead of inside the truck hopper.
It is recommended that all full carts be pulled to the street curb the night prior to your normal service day to avoid the cart from being set out late. All late set outs will have to wait until the following week’s service day. Recycling carts must be at the curb before 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. DDA Alleyway areas should have their recycling carts out by 6 am day of service.
All missed pick-up for recycling carts need to be filed at the City of Ann Arbor. The City of Ann Arbor will assign a ticket number to the issue and then assign it to Recycle Ann Arbor. Call the City of Ann Arbor Customer Service at 734.794.6320 or email [email protected] to get a new cart replacement and the cracked cart removed. If only a repair is needed, please let the city staff know what part needs to be repaired (lid, wheel, hinge).
The closed lid prevents materials from falling out or being blown away while the cart is lifted by the collection truck. Loose recycling materials are a hazard to workers, pedestrians, and nearby homes and cars. Do not secure the lid closed, as this will prevent the cart from being emptied. Any recycling material outside the cart will not be removed by the driver. If you have abundant recycling materials that need to be recycled, please consider driving them to the Drop Off Station or the Recovery Yard.
Curbside recycling in the City of Ann Arbor is now collected by hydraulic hybrid trucks, which lift the recycling carts to be emptied. The trucks are not able to lift the old recycling bins.
You may request to be put on the special pick-up list, by calling the City of Ann Arbor at (734) 994-2807. Recycle Ann Arbor is not able to add or remove residents from the special pick-up list. This is only arranged by the City of Ann Arbor. If you are approved for special pick-up, Recycle Ann Arbor will bring your cart to the curb for collection, but you are responsible for bringing the cart back up to your home. You also have the option of placing recyclable materials on your porch in a clear plastic bag.
Single-stream recycling allows all recyclables to be placed into one recycling bin without separating papers from containers. It does not mean mixing recyclable materials with trash. Single-stream recycling is easy and convenient, which encourages residents to recycle the most materials possible. The City of Ann Arbor’s single-stream recycling system includes plastic bottles and tubs; glass; metal; mixed paper; boxboard; cardboard; and cartons. Single-stream recycling does not include yard waste or food waste which should be placed in composting bins.
Recycle Ann Arbor is not part of the City of Ann Arbor. Recycle Ann Arbor is a private, independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Recycle Ann Arbor is contracted by the City of Ann Arbor to operate its curbside-recycling program.
